Cybersecurity: The Cornerstone of Smart Cities and Digital Transformation, Says INSA Director General Tigist Hamid

Information Network Security Administration (INSA) has emphasized that ensuring cybersecurity across smart city systems is essential to improving citizens’ lives and achieving Ethiopia’s digital transformation goals. The statement was delivered by INSA Director General, H.E. Tigist Hamid, during the third discussion forum of the 6th National Cybersecurity Month, held in Jimma City, Oromia Region.

Speaking at the opening of the forum, themed INSA Director General, H.E. Tigist Hamid the Director General noted that digital transformation is playing a pivotal role in modernizing public services and enhancing the quality of life for citizens.
“Smart city initiatives are designed to deliver fast, convenient, and equitable services. However, without strong cybersecurity, the very foundations of these systems remain vulnerable,” she emphasized. “This is why cybersecurity stands as the backbone of Digital Ethiopia.”

H.E. Tigist Hamid also highlighted INSA’s collaborative efforts with the Oromia Regional Science and Technology Authority to support the region’s digital transformation agenda. Key initiatives include digital cadaster services and the E-Land Management System, among others. She reiterated that protecting digital infrastructure is a shared national responsibility, calling on all stakeholders to jointly safeguard digital progress.

Mr. Wase Germa, Head of the Prosperity Party Office in Jimma City Administration, delivered opening remarks, welcoming the hosting of the National Cybersecurity Month activities in Jimma. He noted that Jimma is among the leading cities in Ethiopia in smart city development.
“Digital transformation has immense benefits for our city, but without ensuring cybersecurity, its impact will be limited,” he stated. “It is therefore essential that cybersecurity receives equal attention alongside digitalization and smart city implementation.”

The ongoing National Cybersecurity Month program in Jimma has brought together regional and city officials, religious leaders, scholars, and other invited guests to discuss advancing secure and sustainable digital growth.
